Live from Robotics and Automation 2024: Automated storage and retrieval from Ocado
Global technology giant Ocado Intelligent Automation (OIA) is celebrating its inaugural year at Robotics and Automation 2024 at Stand 800 with a live demo of its Ocado Storage and Retrieval System (OS/RS).
Previously hidden away within Ocado Group’s grocery warehouses, the fully functional OS/RS grid, which is fitted out with real-life mobile robots, is well worth a visit.
But, as stand technicians are telling attendees, don’t expect to see these robots handling hummus—OIA is on show to demonstrate Ocado’s technology to applications beyond the group’s grocery roots.
Speaking to Robotics & Automation Magazine, Jamie Spencer, VP of sales for Ocado Intelligent Automation, said: “So on the stand today, we’ve got our latest 600 series robotics, this is the latest iteration of our solution. And it’s the model which we’re now releasing out to the marketplace.
“We’ve also brought with us our battery swap unit to the battery swap unit is the latest technology on how would you are exchanging batteries. So it improves performance efficiencies means you don’t need as many box on the grid because it’s an off charging, they’re not picking. So it’s making the system more more efficient for us.
“[The show so far] has been excellent for us. We’re a UK business and we’re very proud of that. So coming here for us, is really important to do it in the way that we have, you know, not to be negative to anybody around the show, we just wanted to make sure that this was an Ocado coming out party and we’ve made an impression. We’ve had some fantastic feedback.
“We’ve engaged with lots of great active projects, generated lots of interest for those who don’t have budgets, but are thinking we need to be looking at this. There’s some really big names and brands here in the UK have engaged with us.
“So for me, as the VP of sales is excellent with was definitely got some good value out the show for sure. We’ll definitely be back next year, maybe even bigger and better.”
This year’s Robotics and Automation Exhibition, which is expected to bring in more than 8,000 visitors, is the perfect opportunity for the company to show off its automation specialism to the UK market.
Ocado is leveraging the high-quality footfall to get visitors to expand their understanding of OIA’s offering, and to think of the applicability of its solutions beyond just grocery and to consider pharmaceuticals, fashion or car parts and more.
